Annotation: The article considers phrasal verbs, which have a different meaning depending on a context. As stated by McArthur, they have always represented „a vigorous part of English‟. Phrasal verbs indeed make up one-third of the English verb vocabulary. There are a very large number of phrasal verbs in English. The meaning of a phrasal verb is often very different from the meanings of the two words taken separately.
